Outdoor unit knocking at night traced to loose fan blade, not compressor

Aircon case in Seletar Hills, Singapore: noise/vibration traced to outdoor fan blade had come loose from its hub, hitting the protective grille and creating a loud knocking sound at night after targeted diagnosis checks.

Case details

What client reported

The outdoor unit started making a loud knocking sound, mostly at night. The neighbours have complained. A previous contractor said the compressor bearings are failing and the whole outdoor unit needs replacing.

What we found

The unit was still cooling normally, which made compressor bearing failure less likely. The noise pattern was rhythmic and tied to fan speed, not compressor cycling.

  • Cooling output remained normal during the knocking
  • Knocking rhythm matched the outdoor fan rotation speed
  • Fan blade had visible play and was not firmly seated on the hub
  • Contact marks on the protective grille confirmed blade was clipping it

The outdoor fan blade had loosened from its hub. Each rotation brought the blade edge into contact with the protective grille. At night, with less ambient noise, the knocking sounded much louder than expected for such a small mechanical fault.

What we did

The compressor is fine — cooling output confirms that. The fan blade needs to be reseated and secured on the hub. If the hub or blade shows wear, the fan blade can be replaced without touching the compressor or the outdoor unit itself.

After the fan blade was reseated and tightened on the hub, the knocking stopped completely. Cooling continued normally. No compressor work and no outdoor unit replacement were needed.

Timeline

Day 1

Loud knocking from outdoor unit at night, neighbour complaints received

Day 3

Visually inspected the outdoor fan assembly and tested blade tightness before assuming compressor bearing failure

Day 3

Fan blade reseated and secured on hub — knocking stopped, cooling normal

What we learned

Why outdoor knocking often comes from the fan, not the compressor.

  • Fan blades can loosen from the hub over time, especially in outdoor units exposed to weather and thermal cycling. The blade clips the protective grille on each rotation, creating a rhythmic knock.
  • Checking blade tightness and hub condition takes only a visual inspection and should happen before any compressor diagnosis.
  • A compressor nearing failure usually causes cooling loss alongside noise — if the unit still cools normally, the compressor itself is less likely at fault.

If your unit is behaving similarly, start with the service path that fits this case before approving broader scope.
