Case — Auto Mode Keeps Turning Off Traced to Faulty Ambient Temperature Sensor

Aircon case in Jurong East, Singapore: electrical/control traced to ambient sensor circuit on PCB was reading erratic temperatures, causing auto mode logic to shut down thinking room was cold enough after targeted diagnosis checks.

Case Details

What client reported

When I use auto mode, the unit turns off every couple of minutes. Then it turns back on a minute later. This cycle repeats. It is annoying. The cooling works fine if I just use cool mode, so I've given up on auto mode.

What We Found

Shutdown cycles can come from logic glitches or environment. This pattern suggested something else. We checked the temperature the unit was reading.

  • Room thermometer showed 26°C actual room temperature
  • Unit's display showed 19°C when the sensor was read directly
  • Sensor readings were unstable, jumping between 18–25°C erratically
  • Outdoor ambient sensor was stable — indoor sensor data was the issue

The indoor ambient sensor on the PCB had degraded. It was sending unstable readings instead of a steady room temperature. Auto mode read the corrupted data, thought the room was 19°C when it was actually 26°C, and shut down. A moment later, the reading shifted and the unit restarted.

What We Did

The auto mode logic is fine. The sensor is sending bad data. Replacing it will restore accurate readings. Auto mode will then cool to set point and reduce output as the room reaches temperature.

The ambient temperature sensor was replaced. After the replacement, the control panel displayed the correct room temperature. Auto mode now cycles smoothly without abrupt shutdowns. The unit runs stably in auto mode without dropping out.

Timeline

Month 1-2

Auto mode shutdowns start, frequency increases over time

Month 3

Client stops using auto mode, switches to manual cool mode

Day 1

Diagnosis shows sensor temperature mismatch (19°C displayed vs 26°C actual)

Day 2

Ambient temperature sensor replaced

Week 1

Auto mode working smoothly, no unexpected shutdowns

What We Learned

Auto mode behavior depends on sensor accuracy.

  • Auto mode shuts down based on sensor readings. A corrupted sensor feeds wrong data and the unit shuts off too early.
  • Compare the panel temperature against a room thermometer. A persistent mismatch points to sensor failure.
  • A faulty sensor is cheaper to replace than a full PCB. Check the temperature reading before assuming the board has failed.

Best Next Step

If your unit is behaving similarly, start with the service path that fits this case before approving broader scope.
