Power & electrical problems
Aircon cannot start, keeps turning off, trips the breaker, or shows flashing lights. Understand likely electrical causes and when to call a technician.
Why your aircon will not turn on or keeps shutting off
Power and electrical issues range from minor (dead remote batteries, tripped isolator) to serious (compressor failure, wiring fault). Before assuming the worst, check the basics: is the isolator switch on? Is the circuit breaker tripped? Has the remote run out of batteries? These account for a surprising number of service calls.
If the unit starts but shuts off after a few minutes, it is likely short cycling. This happens when the compressor overheats due to restricted airflow, low refrigerant, or a failing capacitor. The unit's protection circuit shuts it down to prevent damage, then it restarts once cooled — creating a start-stop-start loop.
A breaker that trips repeatedly when the aircon runs is a safety concern. It could indicate a wiring fault, a failing compressor drawing excessive current, or an overloaded circuit shared with other appliances. Do not keep resetting the breaker — have the circuit inspected by a qualified technician.
