Outdoor unit not running traced to contactor relay fault

Aircon case in Punggol, Singapore: electrical/control traced to contactor relay fault in the outdoor control path after targeted diagnosis checks.

Case details

What client reported

The indoor fan is blowing but the room stays warm. I went to check and the outdoor unit is completely silent — not running at all.

What we found

When the outdoor side does not start, we check the start path first — the control components that tell the outdoor unit to turn on.

  • Indoor side was running but cooling did not begin
  • Outdoor start sequence did not complete
  • Contactor relay response did not match normal operation

The contactor relay was not switching correctly, so the outdoor side never received the signal to start. The indoor fan still ran, which made the symptom confusing — but the fault was in the outdoor control path.

What we did

The compressor is fine. The outdoor unit was not receiving the signal to start because the contactor relay was not switching correctly. Correcting the relay gets the outdoor side running again. We retest the full start sequence to confirm stable cooling before finishing.

After the contactor relay was corrected, the outdoor side started normally and cooling returned.

Timeline

Day 1

Indoor fan running but outdoor unit completely silent — no cooling

Day 2

Checked the outdoor start path and contactor response before condemning major parts

Day 2

Relay corrected — outdoor side started normally, cooling returned

What we learned

How to tell a contactor relay fault from a compressor failure.

  • When the indoor fan runs but the outdoor side stays completely silent, the compressor may never have received the signal to start — not necessarily that it failed.
  • A contactor relay is the component that tells the outdoor side to switch on. If it does not switch correctly, the outdoor unit stays off regardless of the compressor's condition.
  • Checking the outdoor start path and relay response before any compressor diagnosis avoids condemning an expensive part that may still be fully working.
