Weak airflow traced to dust buildup, not compressor fault

Aircon case in Bukit Merah, Singapore: airflow traced to severely clogged evaporator coil and blower wheel restricting airflow after targeted diagnosis checks.

Case details

What client reported

The aircon has been getting weaker over about six months. It still blows air but the cooling isn't strong. A technician came and said the compressor might be going. I wanted a second opinion before spending that much.

What we found

Gradual cooling loss over months usually points to restriction before component failure. We started with a visual inspection before drawing any conclusions.

  • Air filter was completely clogged — airflow was already restricted before reaching the coil
  • Evaporator coil had a thick layer of dust buildup across most of its surface area
  • Blower wheel was heavily matted with dust, reducing its output significantly
  • Outdoor unit and refrigerant pressure were both normal — no compressor fault found

Dust had accumulated on the evaporator coil and blower wheel over years of use without a deep clean. The restriction was gradual — that's why the cooling faded slowly rather than stopping suddenly. The compressor and refrigerant system were both functioning correctly.

What we did

No parts needed. A chemical wash cleared the evaporator and blower wheel completely. Airflow and cooling recovered immediately after the clean — no repair scope was needed at all.

Cooling returned to normal strength after the chemical wash. The customer avoided a compressor investigation that wasn't warranted and got the unit back in one visit.

Timeline

Months before

Cooling gradually weakening — unit still running but output fading

Service day

Visual inspection of evaporator coil and blower wheel before any component testing

Service day

Chemical wash cleared evaporator and blower — full cooling restored with no parts replaced

What we learned

Gradual loss vs. sudden failure.

  • Sudden loss (cold yesterday, not cold today) = likely a component failure or electrical issue
  • Gradual loss over months = usually buildup or restriction — not a broken part
  • Checking the coil and blower before quoting parts is the correct first step
