Case — Loud Rattling in Wall Unit Traced to Worn Motor Bearing

Aircon case in Clementi, Singapore: noise/vibration traced to motor bearing clearance exceeded spec, causing rotor contact during spin-up after targeted diagnosis checks.

Case Details

What client reported

Every time the bedroom aircon turns on, there's a loud rattling or grinding noise for the first few seconds. After that it runs quietly. I'm worried the motor is about to fail.

What We Found

Startup rattle can come from loose brackets or bearing wear. We checked both the mounting and the motor directly.

  • Mounting brackets were secure, no movement
  • Rattle timing matched the motor spin-up phase, not a loose part
  • Manual spin of the fan motor revealed significant side play in the shaft
  • Bearing clearance exceeded manufacturer spec for this unit model

The motor bearings have worn after 14 years of use. Bearing clearance has increased beyond tolerance. When the rotor starts spinning, it contacts the bearing housing briefly. Once speed is up, centrifugal force centers the rotor. That initial contact produces the startup rattle.

What We Did

The bearings are worn but the motor coils and compressor are fine. The unit still cools well. A motor replacement will eliminate the noise. At this age, a motor swap is the most cost-effective path.

The motor was replaced with a compatible model. The startup rattle disappeared completely. The unit has been running quietly and cooling normally for the past five months since the motor replacement.

Timeline

Month 1-12

Startup rattle noticed, worsens over time

Day 1

Diagnosis confirms bearing wear

Day 3

Motor replaced with compatible unit

Month 5

Unit runs quietly with no noise, cooling remains strong

What We Learned

Motor bearing wear produces a distinctive startup rattle.

  • A rattle during the first few seconds of startup that stops at full speed usually means bearing play, not loose mounting.
  • Checking the fan motor shaft by hand (power off) for side play is the quickest diagnostic check.
  • Bearing wear is common in units over 10 years old. A motor swap costs far less than a new unit.

Best Next Step

If your unit is behaving similarly, start with the service path that fits this case before approving broader scope.
