Aircon not cold

Your aircon is running but the room stays warm. Here is how to read the pattern, what usually causes it, and what we check before touching anything.

Common causes

A symptom is just a starting point. The same problem could be a quick fix or a major failure. The paths below show the most common causes, but only a proper check can prove what is really wrong.

01

Blocked airflow

Low risk

Your filter is probably clogged. Cold air cannot reach the room even though the unit is running normally.

  • Airflow feels weaker than before.
  • Cooling is uneven across the room.
  • Getting gradually worse, not sudden.

The Fix: A standard chemical wash or deep cleaning usually clears the blockage and restores full airflow immediately.

Watch out: If someone recommends gas top-up before checking airflow, push back. Both faults feel identical from where you sit. Airflow check costs nothing. Gas top-up without a leak check is money spent on a symptom.

02

Refrigerant leak

Book a check

A leak is causing refrigerant to drop slowly. The unit blows air but there is not enough refrigerant to cool it. Airflow feels normal, and that is what separates this from blocked airflow.

  • Cooling was fine before and slowly getting worse over weeks.
  • Room takes much longer to reach comfort.
  • Airflow still feels normal.

The Fix: We perform a pressure test to locate the exact leak point, braze or reseal the copper pipes, and then properly recharge the refrigerant.

Watch out: Repeated top-ups without fixing the leak will cost you repeatedly. The refrigerant drops again. The leak must be found and sealed first.

03

Compressor or start fault

Book a check

The compressor cannot start or hold load. Air still blows but no real cooling happens.

  • Outdoor unit sounds wrong: too quiet, humming then stopping, or unstable.
  • Cooling stopped suddenly, not gradually.
  • Running longer makes no difference.

The Fix: We test the electrical draw at the outdoor unit. If it's a capacitor, we replace it on the spot. If the compressor has failed, we provide a full diagnostic report for a major repair.

Watch out: Compressor replacement is a major job. A smaller start component is sometimes the actual trigger. Confirm root cause before approving major work.

Not Always A Fault - it might be the room

West-facing rooms in the afternoon, doors opening frequently, curtains open, and appliances running. These push heat in faster than a standard unit can remove it. The aircon is working fine.

How to tell

  • Cooling feels weak only in the afternoon and improves at night.
  • Other rooms on the same system cool normally.
  • Airflow is strong and nothing has changed with the unit.

If this is the case we will tell you on-site. No repair needed.

What To Note Before You Contact Us

No disassembly needed. Just observe:

  • Airflow strength: weak, normal, or strong compared to before.
  • Timeline: sudden, or gradually worse over days or weeks.
  • Outdoor unit: steady, humming then stopping, clicking, or silent.
  • Time pattern: weak all day, or only during certain hours.

The more specific you are, the faster we point you to one next step.

Stop Using The Unit If You Notice These

These are not cooling faults. These are safety issues.

  • Burning or electrical smell
  • Breaker tripping repeatedly
  • Water near power points or exposed wiring
  • Loud metal banging from the outdoor unit
