Aircon smells when starting

Startup smell usually comes from damp buildup or electrical heat smell. Smell type and timing split them fast.

Common causes

These are likely causes for this symptom. Compare them with what you are seeing now to narrow it down. This is indicative only. To confirm the problem, contact us.

01. Moisture growth in tray or drain area

Low risk

Damp zones support mold buildup and create a musty smell that is strongest at startup.

  • Smell strongest in the first few minutes.
  • Odor reduces after longer runtime.
  • No clear electrical warning signs.

Solution: We check the source of the smell, clean affected areas, and confirm safe operation.

Remarks: Masking smell for a short time without fixing damp buildup usually means it will return.

02. Growth on coil or fan surfaces

Book a check

When buildup spreads across airflow surfaces, smell can last well beyond startup and slowly get worse.

  • Smell persists after startup phase.
  • Airflow feels stale across longer runs.
  • Pattern trends worse over weeks.

Solution: We inspect airflow surfaces, clean what is affected, and confirm airflow and smell pattern after the run starts.

Remarks: Short-term fragrance sprays do not solve deep airflow-surface buildup.

03. Electrical heat-odor pattern

Message now

Stressed insulation or wiring points can create a sharp burnt smell and need immediate caution.

  • Smell is burnt, sharp, or plastic-like.
  • Smell appears with unusual heat or sound.
  • Operation becomes unstable during smell events.

Solution: We shut power, check the electrical path for heat damage, replace damaged parts, and confirm safe restart.

Remarks: Treating all smells as mold can delay urgent action on electrical-risk patterns.

Other possible causes

Smells from shafts, drains, or nearby units can be pulled into return-air paths. It can feel like internal unit buildup even when the source is outside.

How to tell

  • Smell intensity changes when doors or windows nearby are opened or closed.
  • Smell appears in certain weather without run-time change.
  • Smell type shifts quickly instead of staying one stable type.

If this is the case, we will call it out before suggesting service scope.

Before you contact us (optional)

Just observe, no opening needed:

  • Smell type: musty / sour / burnt / plastic-like / chemical-like
  • Timing: startup only / mid-cycle / all the time
  • Intensity trend: stable / fading / worsening over time
  • Any linked warning signs: heat / unusual sounds / breaker events

Stop using the unit if you notice these

These are not routine odor faults. These are safety issues.

  • Burnt electrical smell
  • Breaker trips during odor events
  • Smoke-like smell with heat buildup
  • Any spark or crackling sound
