Aircon outdoor unit not running

If your indoor unit turns on but the outdoor unit stays silent, the fault can be small or serious. This guide helps you read the pattern before paying for the wrong fix.

Common causes

01. Command handoff or mode condition

Low risk

Sometimes the outdoor unit is not faulty. The indoor unit may be in the wrong mode, the set temperature may already be satisfied, or the cooling call may not be active. This can look like an outdoor failure from a distance.

  • Indoor unit responds to the remote, but cooling mode may not actually be active.
  • The issue started after mode, timer, or setting changes.
  • The outdoor unit starts again after settings are corrected.

Solution: We confirm the operating mode, set temperature demand, and whether the indoor unit is sending a cooling command before moving to electrical checks.

Remarks: If the unit is clearly in cool mode and the outdoor unit stays silent every time, do not stop at remote checks. The fault may be in the outdoor electrical path.

02. Start circuit or outdoor electrical path fault

The outdoor unit receives a cooling call but cannot start. Common causes include the run capacitor, contactor, relay, or another electrical path fault that interrupts startup.

  • Indoor unit runs but no cooling starts.
  • You hear clicking, humming, or a brief attempt from the outdoor unit.
  • The problem appeared suddenly, not gradually.

Solution: We test the outdoor startup path step by step and confirm whether the fault is a smaller start component or a deeper electrical issue.

Remarks: These faults are often misread as compressor failure. Confirm the start components before approving major work.

03. Protection lock or compressor-side fault

If the system detects overload, heat stress, or an unsafe electrical condition, the outdoor unit may stay off or shut down quickly. The lockout is a symptom of another fault that needs checking.

  • Breaker trips, flashing errors, or repeated failed starts.
  • Outdoor unit casing feels unusually hot after attempts to run.
  • Burning smell or unstable startup sounds appear with the no-start pattern.

Solution: We isolate the cause of the lockout and test the outdoor load condition before recommending any repair. Major repairs are only advised after confirmed test results.

Remarks: Repeated restart attempts can worsen heat damage. If the unit is tripping or smells burnt, stop using it and get it checked.

Other possible causes

When the room is already near the set temperature, or when settings were changed recently, the outdoor unit may not start immediately. Some systems also pause briefly during mode changes. That is normal behavior, not a breakdown.

How to tell

  • The outdoor unit starts after correcting the mode or lowering the set temperature.
  • The no-start pattern only happens after changing settings.
  • There are no strange sounds, smells, or breaker trips.

If the outdoor unit still does not run in cool mode after demand is confirmed, it needs diagnosis.

  • Indoor unit response: Does the indoor unit fan run / and does the display respond normally?
  • What does the outdoor unit do: silent / clicking / humming / starts then stops?
  • Error indicators: Any flashing light / error code on the indoor unit?
  • Smell profile: Does the breaker trip / does any burnt smell appear during startup?
