Aircon Gas Top-up in Singapore

Low refrigerant is a symptom, not the problem — the gas went somewhere. We locate the leak source before topping up, because refilling without fixing the leak just resets the clock.

How we handle gas top-up jobs

  • Pressure check before topping up

We confirm the unit is actually low on refrigerant before adding anything. Some complaints that look like gas loss turn out to be electrical or airflow faults.

  • We find the leak first

We check for the leak source before topping up. If the source is accessible and fixable on the visit, we repair it. If it is not, we tell you what that means for the top-up's longevity.

  • We flag when top-ups stop making sense

If this is not the first top-up, we tell you plainly when the ongoing cost of topping up is no longer the sensible approach versus repairing or replacing.

Signs the unit may be low on refrigerant

These symptoms suggest the unit is running low on refrigerant. They can also overlap with other faults, so we confirm via pressure check before concluding it is a gas issue.

  • Unit still running but room stays warm even after a long time
  • Ice forming on the refrigerant pipe or indoor coil
  • Indoor unit blowing air that is only slightly cool, not cold
  • Hissing or bubbling sound from the unit
  • Unit recently repaired or reinstalled and not cooling properly
  • Same problem returned after a previous gas top-up

What a gas top-up visit involves

We do not top up blindly. The process starts with a pressure check and leak assessment before any refrigerant is added.

  1. 1. Pressure check and confirmation

We connect gauges to the refrigerant circuit and read the operating pressures. This confirms whether the unit is actually low on refrigerant or whether the complaint has a different cause.

  2. 2. Leak detection

If pressure is low, we check for the leak source. Common locations are flare connections, service valves, evaporator coil joints, and condenser coil sections. We use electronic detectors and soap solution for accessible areas.

  3. 3. Repair accessible leaks

If the leak source is accessible and repairable on the same visit — a loose flare, a cracked joint — we repair it before topping up. Topping up without sealing the leak is a short-term fix.

  4. 4. Refrigerant top-up

Once the leak is addressed or confirmed not repairable on-site, we top up to the manufacturer's specified operating pressure. We use R32 or R410A depending on the unit.

  5. 5. Performance check

We run the unit and confirm suction and discharge pressures are within normal range and that cooling has been restored. We note the amount added and any leak locations found.

Why leak detection comes before top-up

Low refrigerant almost always means the gas went somewhere. A sealed system does not lose refrigerant under normal operation. If the unit needs topping up, it almost certainly has a leak — or the system was improperly charged during installation.

  • A top-up without sealing the leak will last weeks to months, not years
  • Repeated top-ups cost more than addressing the leak source once
  • Running a unit on low refrigerant damages the compressor over time
  • We check for the leak source before recommending a top-up
  • If the leak cannot be fixed on-site, we tell you what that means for longevity

Gas top-up pricing

Cost depends on the refrigerant type, amount needed, and whether leak repair is included. We confirm the cost after the pressure check.

  • On-site diagnostic — $30/visit
  • Waived if top-up or repair work proceeds
  • Refrigerant and leak repair quoted after diagnosis

Booking and visit timing

Gas top-up visits are typically booked within one to two days. The visit includes pressure check and leak detection before any refrigerant is added.

  • Visit typically takes 30 to 60 minutes including leak check
  • Accessible leak repairs on the same visit add time
  • If the leak source needs a separate repair, we explain the next step
  • We prioritise gas-related bookings given the compressor risk

Refrigerant types we work with

The refrigerant type is determined by the unit — you cannot change it without replacing the entire system. We check the nameplate and source the correct refrigerant for the unit.

  • R32 — most common in newer units (post-2015)
  • R410A — widely used in older split systems
  • R22 — found in older legacy units, being phased out
  • R290 — used in some inverter models
  • We check the nameplate before sourcing refrigerant — do not mix types
  • R22 units require careful handling due to regulatory status

What repeated gas loss means

If the unit needs a top-up more than once a year, the leak is likely larger or more accessible than a slow seep from a joint. At some point, the ongoing cost of top-ups exceeds the cost of tracking and repairing the leak properly.

  • A slow seep from a flare connection may need topping up every 12 to 18 months
  • A faster leak at a coil joint or service valve needs repair, not repeated top-ups
  • Compressor damage from prolonged low-charge operation shortens unit life significantly
  • We advise on when the leak should be repaired rather than topped up

When gas top-up is not the right starting point

If the unit is not cooling but there is no pressure drop, the problem is not refrigerant. These situations need a different diagnostic path.

  • Unit blowing warm with normal airflow → check electrical and refrigerant fault path
  • Outdoor unit not running → compressor or electrical fault, not gas
  • Unit trips the breaker → electrical fault, not a gas issue
  • Error code showing → read the code before assuming gas
  • Ice on the coil but no pressure drop → airflow restriction or dirty coil

What customers say

I really appreciate how honest and efficient this company is. They identified the problem quickly and fixed it without unnecessary charges. I would definitely recommend them!

Accurate diagnosis for electronic problem, fair price for recond parts instead of expensive new parts, otherwise may just need to replace the whole aircon unit.
