5 Things That Void Your Aircon Warranty
An aircon warranty sounds like protection, but it comes with conditions most owners never read. Several common actions — some that seem harmless — can void the coverage entirely. Knowing them upfront preserves the safety net you paid for.
Why Warranty Conditions Matter More Than Warranty Length
A long warranty period looks reassuring on paper, but the coverage is only as strong as the conditions that come with it. Most aircon warranties in Singapore require the owner to maintain the unit according to the manufacturer's guidelines. If those guidelines are not followed, the manufacturer can reject a claim — even if the failure is clearly a manufacturing defect.
The conditions are usually stated in the warranty card or installation documentation. Few homeowners read them in full. The list below covers the most common actions that void or weaken coverage, based on what manufacturers and installers typically specify.
1. Skipping Regular Servicing
This is the most common warranty void in practice. Most manufacturer warranties require proof of regular servicing — typically quarterly or biannually — as a condition of coverage. If the compressor fails and you cannot produce servicing receipts, the manufacturer can argue that lack of maintenance contributed to the failure and decline the claim.
The servicing does not need to be done by the original installer in most cases, but it does need to be done by a qualified provider and documented. A receipt with the date, service scope, and company name is the minimum. Some manufacturers require the receipt to specify that the work was done by a licensed aircon technician.
3. Using the Wrong Refrigerant
Refrigerant types are not interchangeable. A system designed for R32 cannot be topped up with R410A without damaging the compressor and potentially the entire refrigerant circuit. If a technician tops up with the wrong gas — whether by mistake or because the correct gas was unavailable — the warranty on the compressor is typically voided.
This is more common than it should be, particularly with older units where the refrigerant type is not immediately obvious. Before any gas-related work, the technician should verify the refrigerant type from the unit's data plate. If you are present during the service, it is worth confirming which gas is being used.
4. Opening Sealed Compartments Yourself
Cleaning the air filter is owner-level maintenance — manufacturers expect it. But opening the unit beyond the filter access panel, removing the front casing, or accessing the electrical compartment is not covered under owner maintenance. If the manufacturer inspects a failed unit and finds signs of non-professional disassembly, they can reject the claim.
This is relevant for homeowners who watch online tutorials and attempt deeper cleaning or minor repairs themselves. The intention may be good, but the warranty does not distinguish between helpful and harmful DIY. If the unit is still under warranty, the safest approach is to leave anything beyond filter access to a professional.
5. Failing to Register the Installation
Some brands require the installer to register the installation — either online or via a warranty card — to activate the warranty. If this step is skipped, the manufacturer may have no record that the unit was installed, and the warranty clock may not have started. When a claim is filed, the response is that no warranty exists for this unit.
Ask the installer at handover whether the warranty has been registered and request written confirmation. If the installer cannot confirm, contact the manufacturer directly with the unit model number and serial number. Catching this early is far easier than discovering it when you need to file a claim.
What to Do If Your Warranty Claim Is Rejected
A rejected claim is not always the final answer. If you have servicing records and the failure appears to be a manufacturing defect rather than a maintenance issue, you can escalate to the manufacturer's regional office. Present your documentation — servicing receipts, photos of the failure, and the installer's diagnosis — and request a review.
If the rejection stands, you still have options. The installer's workmanship warranty may cover the issue separately. Consumer protection channels in Singapore — such as CASE (Consumers Association of Singapore) — can mediate disputes if the rejection seems unreasonable. But the strongest position is always prevention: keep your records, follow the conditions, and verify registration early.
