What We Checked

E1 error was intermittent — the unit operated normally for periods then faulted.
Indoor and outdoor PCBs were powered normally and responded to reset commands.
Communication cable continuity tested intact at rest, but the intermittent nature suggested a positional fault.
Tracing the cable through the ceiling void revealed a nick in the insulation where it crossed the drilling path.
The exposed copper wire was resting against the metal trunking — contact was intermittent depending on cable position.

The Diagnosis

During renovation in the neighboring unit, drilling nicked the communication cable insulation in the shared ceiling void. The exposed copper wire sat against a metal trunking run. When vibration or heat shifted the cable, the exposed section touched the trunking. This created a momentary short that disrupted the communication signal and triggered E1.

What Fixed It

We repaired the nicked insulation with heat-shrink tubing. We then repositioned the cable away from the metal trunking with cable ties to prevent future contact. No parts needed replacing — the PCBs, wiring, and all components were undamaged. We also recommended the homeowner document the damage for a possible insurance claim against the renovation contractor.

E1 cleared immediately after the cable repair. The unit has been running without interruption since. No parts were replaced — the entire fix was insulation repair and cable repositioning.
