Daikin A3 Drain Pump Failure on Ceiling-Concealed Unit
Aircon case in Bukit Timah, Singapore: water leakage traced to condensate pump motor failure causing drain pan overflow after targeted diagnosis checks.
Case Details
- Reported
- The aircon in the living room keeps showing an error and shutting off. There was some water dripping from the ceiling near the unit yesterday. It is a concealed type unit inside the ceiling.
- Unit
- Daikin · Ceiling-concealed · 7–12 years
- Location
- Landed · Bukit Timah, Singapore
What We Checked
- A3 error was active on the Daikin controller.
- Drain pan had standing water near the overflow level.
- Float switch was in the raised position, confirming the pan was full.
- Condensate pump showed no response when powered — motor did not spin or hum.
- Direct voltage application to the pump motor confirmed the motor was dead.
The Diagnosis
The condensate pump motor had failed after years of continuous use. Ceiling-concealed units rely on a pump to lift condensate water from the drain pan to the discharge point because gravity drainage is usually not possible with the installation layout. When the pump stopped working, condensate accumulated in the drain pan until it reached the float switch level, triggering the Daikin A3 error and shutting the unit down as a protective measure.
What Fixed It
We explained that the pump motor had reached end of life and the fix was a pump replacement. The drain pan, float switch, indoor unit, and piping were all intact — no other components were affected. We recommended a direct replacement with a compatible condensate pump rated for the unit's condensate output. The replacement involved accessing the ceiling void, disconnecting the old pump, and installing the new one in the same position.
The condensate pump was replaced. Water drained normally on the first test cycle, the float switch returned to its resting position, and the A3 error cleared. No further dripping or shutdowns.
Why This Happens
Why ceiling-concealed units need condensate pumps and what happens when they fail.
- Ceiling-concealed units are often installed where gravity drainage is not possible — the condensate pump lifts water from the drain pan to the nearest discharge point.
- When the pump motor fails, water has nowhere to go and backs up in the drain pan until the float switch triggers the A3 error.
- The pump is a replaceable component with its own lifespan — pump failure does not indicate a problem with the indoor unit itself.
